Glossary of Terms
Bending Moment
Bending moments occur when torque or pressure is applied to the element so that the element bends.
Compression
Compression is the amount or degree of force needed to change the density or shape of an object.
Density
Density is the mass of an object under specified conditions of pressure and temperature
Electric Resistance
The measurement of the degree to which an object opposes an electric current through the object.
Flammability
Flammability is the combustible of materials.
Modulus of Elasticity
Modulus of elasticity is the mathematical description of an object or substance’s tendency to be deformed (non-permanently) when a force is applied.
Modulus of Rupture
Modulus of rupture is the maximum amount of stress applied to an object at the time of failure
Surface Hardness
Surface hardness is the resistance to scratching, abrasion, cutting or denting when a load is applied. The greater the hardness, the greater resistance it has to deformation.
Thermal Expansion
Thermal expansion is the tendency of matter to change in volume in response to a change in temperature
Ultimate Strength
Ultimate strength is the maximum stress that an object can withstand under load of compression, tension or shear.
